Charlie Brown On Skates

Inline Speedskating? Good Grief!

End of Summer Report

So… haven’t posted in awhile. I’m still skating, but things have not been optimal in the last few months. Problems began in August when my back problems began flaring up. I fought it for the next month while trying to decide whether or not to attend the North Shore Marathon, the best race of the year. Ultimately I had to decide to skip it. The pain was just too much to bother doing the race.

The day of that decision, I also had some kind of abdominal attack. What it was is still a mystery. I don’t know if it was related to skating, but at Sunday’s first indoor practice, I came home and had some severe cramping again. I didn’t have another attack, but I’m not sure what to think at this point.

Meanwhile my fitness level has dropped through the floor. I’m also having real trouble getting my frames aligned right, which is only furthering my frustration.

Right now my plan is to probably skip the Sunday coached practices for awhile and simply skate the open skates during the week and see how things go. Meanwhile, I’ve got to get some other fitness regimen going.

It’s funny how things went this year. At Badger I was feeling great with my best finish ever. It’s been literally all downhill - steeply - since then! I’m hoping to get my fitness back on track and see if I can right the ship. Only time will tell.

Hey, Tom! Long time no see!
I got to meet Cale and Margo at the Houston IM. That was cool.
Sorry your back is still hurting. I can’t imagine.
The abdominal thing - is it maybe gall bladder? Just an idea.
I had a good race here in Houston. Broke 2 hours, so that is a milestone for me.
Welp, get better, and come to SLF some time to give us a “howdy”.

Hey Bill! Cale said he met someone who knew me, that must have been you. Actually, I’ve had my gall bladder out, so it can’t be that. Who knows! Way to break 2 hours, that’s great!

Hey man. I can relate. Be careful. My bad back all season really weakened my core (abs) which resulted in me getting a sports hernia. It is not fun. Make sure that you keep doing those back and ab workouts.

Yep, right on Cor. I had my sports hernia fixed with my ball bladder surgery years ago. If it ain’t one thing…!

Sorry to hear about your recurring back pain. On days when you can’t skate but want to keep up with your training, logging some time on the bike may not be such a bad idea. It helps to keep the fitness on track.

BTW, I moved my blog to a new URL…

Thanks for the suggestion Candy. I do plan on doing some bike work, especially in the winter. Thanks for the update on your blog URL too!
